Today we honor 51 years of hip-hop—a culture born on August 11, 1973, when DJ Kool Herc laid the foundation for something far greater than music. What started as a spark in the Bronx grew into a movement that shaped lives and communities across the globe. My introduction to hip-hop was a quiet moment in my home studio, where I discovered Nas for the first time. It wasn’t flashy, but it was profound. At that moment, I realized hip-hop was going to be more than just a genre—it was going to be part of my life.

Hip-hop is more than beats and bars; it’s been a teacher, a companion, and a mirror reflecting the realities of life.

In the stories told by MCs, we’ve found:

  • A father figure, delivering wisdom through artists who channel the voices of our ancestors and carry the lessons of the streets.

  • A lover, in the vulnerability and intimacy of tracks like Common’s "I Used to Love H.E.R.," which speaks to the deep connection we feel for this art form.

  • A big brother, in the mentorship of artists like Jay-Z and Nas, offering guidance on life, ambition, and survival.

  • A friend whose struggles and triumphs we can relate to, in the words of J. Cole or Mos Def, shows us that we are never truly alone.

  • A coach, urging us to elevate and compete in the spirit of battle rap—whether in lyrical feuds like Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake or in the unspoken challenges that push all artists to their best.

But hip-hop doesn’t stop at music. It’s woven itself into every part of our lives, giving us:

  • Ciphers, spaces where we unite to express, create, and build community.

  • A voice, where authenticity is the currency, and the power of self-expression is limitless.

  • A bridge, crossing cultural, racial, and geographical divides, showing us how connected we truly are.

As I reflect today, I’m filled with gratitude for the power of hip-hop to connect, inspire, and guide us through life’s journey.

Here are 10 ways hip-hop has profoundly influenced global culture:

  1. Transforming Music: Hip-hop’s influence on music is far-reaching, shaping R&B, Pop, Rock, and even genres like Country.

  2. Redefining Fashion: From its roots in streetwear to now commanding high fashion, hip-hop has dictated style with authenticity and innovation.

  3. Giving Voice to the Voiceless: Hip-hop has become a platform for protest, addressing systemic racism, inequality, and social justice in ways that move the conversation forward.

  4. Changing Food Culture: Hip-hop’s love for food, especially soul food, BBQ, and Southern cooking, has spread worldwide, showing how food and culture are always intertwined.

  5. Creating Subcultures: From East Coast to West Coast, UK Grime to Afrobeats, hip-hop has evolved into distinct sounds that reflect the cultures that embrace it.

  6. Reinventing Language: Hip-hop’s slang—words like "dope," "fresh," and "lit"—has seeped into everyday conversation, giving language new life.

  7. Driving Dance: From Breakdancing to Popping and Locking, hip-hop has created entire movements through dance, allowing for self-expression in every step.

  8. Visual Storytelling: Hip-hop’s influence on street art, graffiti, and music videos has expanded the boundaries of visual art, making it a voice for the unheard.

  9. A Platform for Identity: Hip-hop has always been about reinvention—giving people the freedom to express who they are, unapologetically.

  10. Bridging Cultures: Hip-hop serves as a global cultural ambassador, crossing borders and fostering understanding between people from different walks of life.

So today, I stand with humility and excitement, thankful for hip-hop’s journey, and ready for what’s to come. Thank you to the pioneers, the legends, and everyone who’s been part of this incredible culture. This is just the beginning.
